Rain tanks are great as the first catchment of rainwater off of roofs on your property, and they collect great quality water typically at a decent height above your landscape so you can gravity feed water to your plants whenever you want. Laid onto a gravel pad and piped straight from your gutter(s), it is also great to have the overflow pour into some natural drainage system like a rock creek when possible. It is also important to install a First Flush system, so the initial rain that catches most of the sediment and debris off your roof is diverted before the cleaner water falls into your tank.
There is some maintenance on the owner's part to keep things clean and flowing and to manually open the hose bib on the bottom of the tank for direct watering during drier times.
These systems can be pricey, mostly because the tanks themselves can be costly, but otherwise, it is a very valuable piece towards a water-efficient home.
